Autonomous Trading Risk Disclosure
More and more investors are exploring AI-powered tools to help manage their trading. These "Agents" are software programs that can analyze market data, generate trading ideas, and place orders in your account on your behalf.
Agents can offer speed, around-the-clock attention to the markets, and the ability to process large amounts of information quickly. You should keep in mind, however, that allowing AI Agents to make trading decisions in your account introduces new and greater risks than trading on your own. You should understand these risks and decide whether autonomous trading is right for you.
Risks You Should Know About
If you are considering having an Agent trade your account, please keep these risks in mind:
- Unintended trades. An Agent may place orders you did not intend, or that are erroneous or out of line with your trading wishes. They may do so repeatedly if you do not monitor the Agent.
- Excessive trading and volatile markets. An Agent can execute a large number of trades in a short period, generating commissions, fees, and tax consequences that may significantly reduce your account value. When markets move sharply or lose liquidity without warning, a human trader might pause and reassess, but an Agent may keep trading into deteriorating conditions.
- Strategy failure. An Agent follows a set of rules or a model. If those rules are based on flawed data or patterns that no longer hold, the strategy can produce losses.
- Technology failures. Hardware, network, software, or latency problems can result in missed, duplicate, or incorrectly priced orders, or prevent you from canceling or modifying an order in time.
- Security failures. If an Agent's credentials are compromised, its code is altered, or its connection is intercepted, unauthorized parties could place trades, move funds, or access your account information.
- Regulatory and compliance risk. Autonomous trading can attract regulatory scrutiny if it produces patterns that resemble market manipulation, spoofing, layering, or wash trading even if you did not intend to violate any rules. You are responsible for all orders submitted through your account, regardless of how they were generated.
- Leverage and margin risk. An Agent may open leveraged positions or trigger margin calls without your real-time awareness. This could result in forced liquidation of your positions at unfavorable prices and losses that exceed your cash balance.
- AI hallucinations and unreliable outputs. AI systems can generate outputs that appear authoritative but are wrong. Your Agent may act on flawed analysis, outdated information, or misinterpreted instructions, and there may be no obvious sign of a problem until trades have already been placed.
- Unannounced AI changes. Your AI provider may update, retrain, or reconfigure its systems at any time without telling you. The same instructions you gave yesterday could produce very different trading behavior tomorrow.
- Total loss of assets. You could lose some or all of the money and assets you make available for your Agent to trade. A single error or failure can lead to rapid losses, and these risks can never be fully eliminated.
Your Responsibilities
You are responsible for how you use any Agent on your Interactive Brokers account. In particular:
- You are responsible for selecting, setting up, testing, deploying, and monitoring any Agent that accesses your account.
- You are responsible for every order an Agent places, every position it opens, and every loss that results.
- We do not vet or endorse any Agent. You choose your AI provider and link it to your account on your own. Your AI provider is a third party that is not related to, affiliated with, or controlled by Interactive Brokers, and its systems are entirely outside our control. We do not build, run, or maintain them, and we cannot tell you whether an Agent will work properly, produce accurate results, keep your data safe, or be available when you need it.
- We are not responsible for losses or other problems that result from your use of an Agent, including losses caused by Agent malfunction, unauthorized access, or unintended trades.
- We may offer risk controls or integration tools for certain Agents. Although these features can help manage risk, they don't eliminate the risks described above and they do not replace your own active oversight. Interactive Brokers does not supervise, monitor, review, or second-guess your Agent's trading decisions.
- We may suspend or terminate an Agent's access to your account at any time if we believe it is necessary to protect our systems, comply with applicable law, or manage risk.
Autonomous trading can be a powerful tool, but it is not right for everyone. If you choose to use an Agent with your Interactive Brokers account, keep in mind that you could lose some or all of the money and assets you make available for it to trade, and that no safeguard or risk control can guarantee you will avoid losses or errors. We encourage you to start carefully, review your account activity regularly, and only commit assets you can afford to lose.
